The website

set up by a professor at the university of Cologne
http://www.marynissen.org/
allows to enter a family-name at the bottom left and see how that name is
distributed in Belgium.

The names are sensitive to spelling variations and this allows to reflect on
orthography.

Pse remember
- the Northern half is speaking Dutch + regionally Flemish, Brabantish,
Limburgish
- the Southern half is speaking French + regionally Walloon, Picard,
Lorrain-Gaumais and Champenois-Ardennais
- The extreme East is speaking German + regionally Limburgish, Ripuarish and
Moselle-Franconian

*Hahn* is most concentrated South od St-Vith, with some presence in Antwerp
and in West Flanders

*Haan* is not very popular,
*Haen* a bit more (older orthography)

The weak genitive *Haenen* is popular un the South of Belgian Limburg
*Haanen* and *Hanen *are occuring much less frequently

The stong genitive *Haens* is occuring in Antwerp
*Haans* is scattered in the North

Our former prime minister *Dehaene *came from West-Flanders, no surprise
*Dehane *and *Dehane *are not occuring.

Obviously* Hahn* and *Haan *may have a completely different etymology. We
discussed that on this list several years ago.

An other opposition between weak and stong genitive:

*Daenen *especially in Southern Limburg,
With *Danen* at low frequency, and just one occurence of *Daanen*.

*Daens* and *Daans *more in the center of Northern Belgium.

Pse also compare some names with large distribution:
*Peters* with *Peeters*
*Jannssens *with *Jansens* (double genitives), *Jansen, Janssen, Jans*

*IJ *and *EI* represent the same phonem in Dutch, *Y *and* EIJ, EY* are some
older orthograhies;
*Thijs* is occuring in the Norh-East, especially in Limburg
*Thys *has a wider distribution, and y is more acceptable than ij in the
Romance region.
*Theys *is quite popular in the Center
*Theijs* has a quite low frequency
*Theis *is popular close to Luxemburg, and probably pronounced the German
way.

The *TH *has apparently a long tradition, though not phonetically different
from *T*
*Tijs, Tys, Teys* have a low frequency
*Teijs and Teis* are not occuring

*Thüs *seams to have a significant distribution to my surprise, though the
picture as well as the total are identical with *Thys*. An error???

There's a comparable map for the Netherlands:

According to it, Hahn is concentrated in the Randstad (immigration from
Germany, I suspect) and Haan is mostly concentrated in the Saxon-speaking
northeast (besides the metropolitan areas of the Randstad).
