Congratulations anyway, dear great-uncle Reinhard! Sometimes these babies do
come all of a sudden, you know? ;-)

P.S.: About ten minutes ago I just found that I've become a great-uncle.
That and a few pictures is all I know so far ... I owe a few people some
spanking for their secrecy.

Dear Lowlanders,
First congrats to you, Ron, for your (first?) great-uncleship!!!
It would appear, looking at the original posting of yesterday,
that the discussion digressed from the original
TWO questions:
1. The mysteries of the origin of the Basques?
2. The alleged presence of a SECOND race,
comparable to the pygmies in Africa, South
and South-East Asia and (formerly) Australia.
Sorry to dwell on this non-LL subject but I am
fascinated by both questions, but especially
by the second one.
Reading up on "cagots" on the internet has
further confused me.
Greetings 2all, Mike Wintzer

Thanks, guys!
Mike, I'm afraid you may be reading a bit too much into it.
2. The alleged presence of a SECOND race,
comparable to the pygmies in Africa, South
and South-East Asia and (formerly) Australia.
"Pygmies" is likely to be too strong a word. When people want to draw lines
between themselves and what they consider another ethnic group that they
want to ostracize they tend to exaggerate and generalize, especially when it
comes to seizing upon genetic physical features. A general tendency toward
shorter statures makes the whole group "dwarfs" or such, higher incidence
rates of darker skin makes them "black," and relatively frequent occurrence
of shorter earlobes makes them "without earlobes." Extremes of such *modi
operandi* can be seen in the Nazi propaganda machine's publications teaching
people how to spot Jews, Gypsies, Slavs and other "inferior races" by sight,
and all the caricatures that resulted from that.
Bear in mind that the Agot ~ Cagot had to wear special attire to be
recognizable, this being comparable to Jews having to wear special hats in
medieval times and the yellow star under the German fascists. If they were
so easily recognizable, why would it be necessary to distinguish them by
means of attire?
All that matters here is that a certain group was ostracized and that this
group is *alleged to* have had certain physical characteristics. In the
absence of further evidence, all we can do is speculate, also check if
something like this occurred in the Lowlands area apart from views and
treatment of Jews and Roma.
Considering the (C)agot descendants of Goths is ridiculous, since the Goths
were descendants of Scandinavians, and Scandinavians aren't exactly known
for their short stature and swarthy skin. Come my own (wildly) speculated
possibilities:
1. *Goto* ~ *godo* (Goth) had become a dirty word in general and had come
to be applied to any despised groups of persons.
2. Unbeknown to us, (Iranian) Alans (ancestors of todays Ossetians) or
members of another ethnic group (perhaps even supposedly Altaic Huns) that
the Goths had allied themselves with at various times had tagged on to the
Goths and had kept itself separate or was made to do so.
3. The (Germanic-rooted) Vandals had been trough that area on their way
to North Africa, and some of them later crossed from there to the west coast
of Iberia and to the Balearic Islands (all of which is factual). For all we
know, Berbers tagged along and came to be ostracized. "Vandals," "Goths" and
their minions ...? What's the difference, huh? ;-)
Just musing and cautioning ...
Reinhard/Ron
