Moinmoin!

I liked the fireworks of propositions and counter-propositions, Luc and Ron,
and I read with pleasure. Only one sentence of yours made my eyebrows rise,
Luc, when you suggested that codifying and officializing a language is
equivalent to raping it.

I can see your point, Luc, one loses a bit of color, variation and
variability.

But would you propose that the hundreds of standardized languages that enjoy
official status, are the result of rape?

I would agree in the sense that standardization and officialization has
diluted language diversity in countries like France, Spain and Germany, even
Sweden England, etc etc etc but it seems to me that that is a different
matter, one of the standard dominating over

a geographical area that is unduly vast

Mike, Luc, *et al.*,

If it weren't for the development of a (literary) standard variety, Frisian
of the Netherlands might now be in the situation that Frisian of Germany is
in, also Low Saxon of Germany. Sorbian activists in Germany understood this
early on when they developed two literary standards (because of the varietal
spread), and Sorbian literature and studies have been experiencing a mild
boom since then. The same is happening now with Rhaeto-Romance (*Rumantsch*)
in Switzerland. It is not necessarily a matter of instantly artificially
creating and instating a standard variety. Much rather it is a gradual
process in which especially writers and public speakers influence each other
with their written dialects. This is also what happened in the case of
Neo-Norwegian (*Nynorsk*) in Norway, and it is also what happened earlier on
in the "big" languages.

Pastoor weigert tweetalige mis

BRUSSEL - Een Vlaamse pastoor in de faciliteitengemeente
Sint-Genesius-Rode weigert een Franstalige inwoner te begraven omdat
diens familie een tweetalige uitvaartdienst vraagt. De familie is
verontwaardigd.

'Het enige wat ik vraag, is een tweetalige uitvaartdienst voor mijn
vader. Is dat in een faciliteitengemeente te veel gevraagd? Ik weet dat
er hier taalproblemen zijn, maar in de kerk zouden die toch niet mogen
bestaan', zegt Guy Lejeune.

Vorige week woensdag overleed zijn vader. 'Omdat mijn moeder Vlaamse is
en mijn vader Franstalig was, wilde ik een kerkdienst in beide
landstalen', zegt Lejeune. 'Ik belde daarvoor naar de pastoor van de
parochie Sint-Barbara in Sint-Genesius-Rode, waar mijn ouders wonen.
Maar hij liet me verstaan dat ik een andere parochie moest zoeken. Hij
wilde geen enkele uitleg geven.'

'Ik wil geen olie op het vuur gooien en er een politieke strijd van
maken. De enige reden waarom ik een tweetalige misviering vraag, is
omdat anders de helft van mijn familie niet zou begrijpen wat de pastoor
zegt', aldus Lejeune.

'Als morgen een Engelse of Chinese familie komt, moet ik dan ook Engels
of Chinees kunnen spreken', reageert parochiepastoor Jan Baert.
'Sint-Barbara is nog altijd een Nederlandstalige parochie. Ik denk niet
dat veel van mijn parochianen, die alleen Nederlands begrijpen, ermee
gediend zouden zijn als ik een tweetalige misviering zou houden.'

'Ik wil na de begrafenis ook nog pastoor blijven en ik moet de kerk in
het midden houden, maar sommige mensen lijken alleen te willen verstaan
wat in hun kraam past. Dat wijst op een fundamentele onvolwassenheid.'

Lejeune moet zijn vader nu in de parochie van Sint-Paul in Waterloo,
vijf kilometer van Sint-Genesius-Rode, begraven.
