I had some languages pages on the web once.
Here is the back-up of two of them referring to Marols.
Do not point to them, I just loaded them in a temporary directory:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/brussel2.htm
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/brussel3.htm
With respectively a Dutch-Brabantish, a French and a Walloon Brussels text.
I will come back to Brussels local language in a few days.
A scientific judgement:
*Sera de Vriendt* (professor emeritus of both Brussels universities ULB,
French, and VUB, Dutch)
*"A propos du sens de l'expression "parler bruxellois""*
p. 85-100 with summaries in Dutch p 101 and in English p 102
in "Brusselse Thema's", vol 7, 2001, VUB Press
A scan of the summary in English:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/102.jpg
Brussels French and Brussels Walloon *in litterature* are artificial
combinations of errors made by several distinct people, combined in one
basket, as if one person would systematically combine these characteristics.
I will come back to this in a few days.
I did a tour in the Marollen this evening and I want to share some pictures.
It was a grey sky, it may look a bit unenjoyable.
Locating the area:
The Brussels region (19 municipalities) is basically inside the big loop of
motorways on this map:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/bru1.jpg
The core of the *proper municipaly of Brussels* is the orange pentagone,
squares S-14-S-15
The *Marollen* is at the South side. Keep *"Pl Louise"* in S-15 for further
orientation.
(On this map one also sees the *Africa museum in Tervuren,* square V-15)
(See also the name *Stokkel *on the map on the bottom of squares T-14 and
U-14 I eventually come back to Stokkel this week-end. Stokkel has a Terminus
Metro station for line 1. Every Metro-Station in Brussels has its own
design. The one of Stokkel is dedicated to *Hergé* and full of
*TinTin*pictures on the walls)
The area we are talking about is scanned more in detail on:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/bru2.jpg
The lower tip of the pentagone is marked "Hallepoort"
The B in a ring indicates a station of Belgian Railways.
One finds "*Brussels-South"* (Euro-star terminus), *Kapelle* and
(underground) *Central Station*.
Only a few trains stop in Kapelle.
Roughly the area between the Kapelle railway station and the Justice Palace
lower on the map are the Marolles.
We list the pictures in the order of the tour we made, purple arrows on url:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/bru2tour.jpg
We started from the metro station *Louise*.
The way to the Marollen is indicated (direction *Poelaertplein* facing the
Justice Palace)
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/1metro.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/2just.jpg
The Justice palace was constructed on a hill, intentionally high above the
"plebs" of the Marollen area.
One goes down with an elevator:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/3el.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/4el.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/5el.jpg
5e.jpgl is a sight from within the Hoogstraat.
Main streets in the Marollen are the *Miniemenstraat*, between the Justice
palace and the elevator, in parallel but lower the *Hoogstraat* and in
parallel but further lower the *Blaesstraat*.
The *Hoogstraat* is marked in 3 languages:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/6hoog.jpg
And looking down the *Spiegelstraat* from within the Hoogstraat one sees at
the end of the straat a house of the parallel Blaesstraat on
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/7hoog.jpg
The *Blaesstraat* is becoming trendy, with a mixed variety of business, some
impressions:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/8blaes.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/9blaes.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/10blaes.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/11blaes.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/12blaes.jpg
A major square touching the Blaesstraat is the *Vossenplein* (Jeu de Balle),
with its *famous flee market every Sunday morning* (as to the languages one
hears there on a Sunday morning it must be quite known in the Netherlands).
It is very difficult to reach by car, there are a couple of busses though:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/13vos.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/14vos.jpg
Some sights on this square:

http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/17vos.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/18vos.jpg
Going back up to the Hoogstraat through the Sistervatstraat one has at one's
right the Hellemans blocs (from 1906-1912), once a kind of hometown, now
restored:

http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/20sister.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/21sister.jpg
Some impressions along the Hoogstraat:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/22hoog.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/23hoog.jpg
A sight of the elevator,
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/24el.jpg
and one of the streets down at its side:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/25el.jpg
We are not taking the elevator though, but the Minimenstraat to the North.
We see a school in renovation:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/26min.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/27min.jpg
To my feeling "Kindertuin" is a Germanism (Kindergarten).
I'm rather used to kleuterschool, in Limburgish "papsjoeël", often also the
romanism "bewaarschool", cf. French "école gardienne".
Adjacent to the school is the church of the "Miniemen".
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/28min.jpg
A side street, the Kandelaarsstraat, has nice naïve wall paintings,
just two examples: Toots Thielemans and a seller of snails:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/29min.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/30min.jpg
>From the Zavel one looks down to the Our Lady of the Chapel church
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/31zavel.jpg
and up to the Our Lady of the Sand Church
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/32zavel.jpg
A dead end side-street ("impasse" in French) houses some artistic businesses
and at the other end of the church one is on the main road between the
palace of Justice and the Royal square:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/34zavel.jpg
On this road on the left one has a museum with an exhibition about Belgian
comic strips momentarily running:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/35mus.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/36mus.jpg
(It is not falling backward, more a technical problem with my camera, I
guess)
On the Royal square one has a sight on downtown Brussels (tower of the town
hall):
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/37kg.jpg
and in the middle of the square Godfried of Bouillon, once king of Jerusalem
now looking to downtown Brussels, is still tolerated in this town with quite
a large North-African poulation:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/marol/38kg.jpg
Hope this gives you people a feeling how the Marolles look nowadays.
Regards,
Roger
