Hello Fred,

while I was a student at Hamburg University, I was an excessive visitor of
Hamburg's many and excellent theatres, because students could get unsold
tickets, even the best seats, for 11 DM (DM then!) 1/2 hour before the
performance began. (Some students even went so far as to reserve tickets by
telephone, so that they would not be sold otherwise, and then have a fine
evening for 11 DM :-) A little unfair...)

Well, in the theatres it was quite usual to rise while applauding a very
fine performance. Rhythmic applause and Bravos were common, too, when people
were really pleased. These are the "stiff" people of Hamburg. You may say
that with so many students in the audience, everything must be a little more
easy. But when a performance was bad, the audience was not as free in their
expression of displeasure. Even Hamburg's students then used to leave with
only a shrug of the shoulders. I hardly ever heard any Boos.

These were the DM-days. I suppose things have not changed so much in Euro
time :-)
