Hoi alltouhoop,
Jonny, I believe that both these forms relate to the Latin maculatus >
macula 'spot'
hence 'spotless'.
But you confuse virginity with perfection and purity; I had a bad virgin
tooth a few years back.
Cheerio,

Hi all,
And further afield I see (Free Online Dictionary) that the name for
the *Mi*'*kmaq* tribe comes from the Algonquin word, nikmak, *meaning*
"my kin-friends."
Coincidental, the 'mak' root?

RE/Jonny:
Norwegian has makelaus, which looks almost exactly the same but it means
"without equal", "outstanding" which seems similar in meaning but doesn't
have any sense of 'pure, virgin'.
It's said to be derrived from Norse maki (norwegian make), which means 1)
"something similar" 2) husband 3) one out of a pair of things belonging
together.
So then seems to be derrived from meaning 1 here. They don't mention Latin
macula tho:/
maybe a Germanic word similar in shape (*makan-) coincided here with the
Latin one (macula) wich partial interchanging of meanings?
