from Heather Rendall heatherrendall at tiscali.co.uk
Dear Jonny et al.
You wrote "DE:'Makel' means an E: 'mistake', 'stigma', and in consequence we
have the verbum DE: "mäkeln", which could be translated as E: "to
critizise". And - going on - in LS we find "meckern", which also could be
translated as E: "to belittle", "to malign"."
macula Latin = spot, stain immaculate = spotless
Makel DE = mistake stigma ( stain of character)
mäkeln DE = to criticise
spotten DE = to deride, to criticise
Spott = spot = macula =mäkeln
Double development along similar concepts using 2 different languages? Spott
being the Germanic and Mäkeln being the Latinate
Just a thought
Heather
