Beste Roger,

Maybe it is because I've been hearing so much Romanian and Italian lately,
but Limburgish "singing" inevitably makes me think that it may just have
been the way that Roman villa owners were trying to adapt to the speech of
invading Germanic bands, once that the Empire started to collapse. An areal
feature indeed, Cologne and its hinterland have a rich Roman history. Which
cannot be said of Frisia: Frisia non cantat, from a Roman viewpoint. And a
stiff upper lip doesn't exactly give way to singing either. Scandinavian
"singing" could be an entirely different evolution altogether.

On the road now, so my internet access is limited by what my iPhone
allows...haven't been able to read all Lowlands post, so in advance I want
to apologize if this message ignores older posts.

Kind greetings,

Luca, karadeniz

Subject: (West-)Limburgish bitonality

Just for you people getting a feeling about the sound, I ripped a
sample track and downloaded it to url:
http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/cajot/01.mp3
It is about 7 Mb for 7:32 minutes.

It is in West-Limburgish from Hasselt, not too different from Brabantish,
and I hope understandable by many of you.
Its track 01 from "*Jos Ghysen, Conferences*" and clearly recorded at a
carnaval show.
The titel is "*Bè de troep*", Dutch "Bij het leger", English "With the
army".
Enjoy,

Regards,
Roger

PS. It starts with a line from the Limburgish National Song (in Dutch)
