Hello Johnny, Since I was just looking in my Dutch dictionary when your
message appeared on my screen and I remembered having heard the word before;
here is what I learned……


Asjeweine (from Bargoens/Rotwelsch) probably with a Hebrew root. --- weggaan
of doodgaan


Then I looked in my etymological dictionary and got:


Asjeweine (Bargoens  weg, dood) dit is het begin van de formule die wordt
uitgesproken bij het uit het gezicht dragen van de Torah.

Roottentootten(??spelling) I know from the description of a noisy band. It
may have something to do with “rut” a period of sexual activity

It’s nice to hear from you again, neighbor. My name is not Jonny, but I (and
the Kahuna) thank you all the same, especially for the clue regarding Low
Saxon *atschewienern* ('to fool around', 'to be unfaithful' = "to be on
one's way out'?) and Dutch *asjewene(n)* (*sj* = sh, 'to depart, to pass
away').

I wonder if it refers to Hebrew *Hashkiveinu *(my translation: “Lay us down”
= “Put us to sleep”), the first word and title of the (in my opinion very
poignant) Jewish evening prayer said just before retiring for the night
oneself and/or, in some traditions, when retiring the Torah scroll after
reading it in the synagogue.

The pronunciation of Hebrew and the names for God differ according to

I know that in some cases this is recited at the brink of a Jew’s death,
after making sure the *Sh’ma* (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shema_Yisrael)
has been said. The connection is clear: sleep > death. In fact, in the usual
liturgy, the *Hashkiveinu* directly precedes the *Sh’ma*.

No matter how indirect and “subversive” the developments may be (e.g. via
underground and “criminal” jargon in Northern Europe), personally I always
feel very gratified to encounter Jewish contributions to our (native)
Lowlands languages and cultures.

Ik voel nodig en Nederlands etymologisch woordenboek. Het EWN dunkt me goed,
maar is bijster dik en duur, ook online.

Maar over http://gtb.inl.nl/  kom je toch daartoe.

dan www.etymonline.com, waar je altijd de Engelse begrip moet weten en
meestal geen mnd. en osaks. woordel krijgt.
