I wonder, Jonny, whether this is an example of what you are talking about.
In our Anglo-Saxon boundary charters for Wican ( Wike Episcopi) a boundary
marker is given as " ad viam quem dicitur fif ac - recto itinere ad easdem
fif ac" " ( in the Latin part) and " " in fif acana weg & aefter them wege
innon tha fif aecc" ( in the A/S part)
Variously translated as "Five Oaks' Way' and 'the fifth oak'
On an 18th century map the same area is listed as " Pickt Oak Way"
In the 20th century and still today a set of cottages are known as "Pitt Oak
Cottages"
Clearly there has to be some connection; Did someone misread 'fif ac' and
change it to 'pickt oak'. Or did time and usage change the 'fif' to 'pickt'?
Surely an odd shift f > p ; isn't it usually the other way around.
Is this the kind of development within a language you were meaning?
best wishes
