Moin, Lowlanders!

How do you say “turtle” or “tortoise” in Low Saxon?

My inclination is to say *Schildpadd* (from earlier **Schildpadde*).

Afrikaans: *skilpad*
Dutch: *schildpad*
Danish: *skildpadde* (< Middle Saxon **Schildpadde*?)
Norwegian: *skilpadde* (< Danish, Middle Saxon **Schildpadde*?)
Swedish: *sköldpadda* (< Middle Saxon **Schildpadde*?)

Cf. Icelandic *skjaldbaka*

I know that in German *Schildpadd* specifically denotes the material of the
shell (and in extension tortoiseshell cats), but I believe that it is a loan
from the Low Saxon for ‘turtle’ or 'tortoise'. "Turtle” and “tortoise” are *
Schildkröte* in Standard German.

Thanks and regards,
Reinhard/Ron
