Low Saxon: *Piepaant?
Dutch: smient (< *smijdeëend?)



I don't know about the English name, but in Low Saxon (at least in Groningen
and Eastern Frisia) it is "Smeent" for *Anas penelope *(the Eurasian cousin
of *Anas americana*):

ten Doornkaat Koolman explains it as an obscured compositum of *smahi
(related to Scandinavian 'små') and 'Aant', thus "small duck".

But in more eastern regions "Piepaant" seems to be common (
