The context would very often be implied I suppose. Like we don't have
ranches here, so if one speaks of a ranch, it's pretty obvious that it's
somewhere in the Americas, not in NL.

Well, the Dutch had their colonies, and therefrom we have the same problem.
If however I look only within the Netherlands, the same problem still
exists. Even in this small a country, the meaning of a word can vary
depending on which region it is used in.

Heff upklappt den'n  "DUDEN, Etymologie der deutschen Sprache"
*Ranch: *Die Bezeichnung für "nordamerikanische Farm [mit Viehzucht]" wurde
im 20. Jh. aus gleichbed. *amerik. *ranch entlehnt, das  seinerseits
aus *südamerikanisch-span.
*rancho "Ansiedlung: Ranch", *span. *rancho "gemeinschaftliche Mahlzeit,
Kasernentisch; [Feld]lager; Hütte" stammt. Zugrunde liegt das *span.* Verb
rancharse "Unterkunft beziehen; biwakieren", das selbst wiederum aus *frz. *se
ranger "sich aufstellen; sich häuslich einrichten" entlehnt ist. -
Abl.: *Rancher
*"nordamerikanischer Farmer" (20. Jh., aus gleichbed. *amerik. *rancher).

Hier bi uns gifft' noch kein Ranch.
