Dag Luc ,

According to Eric Partridge in “Origins”  - under wool sub 3 - flannel is
derived from a Welsh word *gwlän,*  meaning wool  which has a
derivative *gwlanen.
*He postulates that the g became f and the suffix became –en* *to form the
English word Flannel. But I like your Flemish-centered etymology too.

It might be a loan word from french. They have the word flannelle which can
mean "a glove" or "a face glove" and no doubt the cloth it's self , but of
course , the French may have borrowed it from elsewhere. My french
dictionary doesn't offer any word origins.

Beste Leeglanders, beste Luc,

Over flanel lees ik in het Etymologisch Woordenboek van de Vries en de
Tollenaere, 23 ste druk, 2004:

Uit het Frans flanelle (1650); uit het Eng. flannel (1503), een in
oorsprong kymr. woord gwlanen "wollen" bij gwlan "wol".

Het Etymologisch Woordenboek van Vercoullie (een Oostendenaar) geeft
precies dezelfde uitleg. Zo ook het Etymologisch Woordenboek door van Veen
(uitgave Van Dale).

Nota: het West-Vlaams is "flanélle".

Dear Lowlanders,

Scots has (retained?) the form *flannen* for "flannel".

I wonder if (besides Welsh *gwlanen*) there used to be the dialect variant *
*llanen*, considering that English tended to render Welsh *ll-* ass "fl".
On the other hand, please consider the following known Welsh forms for
"wool": *gwlân *~ *wlân*.

Welsh *w *represents a vowel: [ʊ] (as in English "p*u*t").

BTW, Breton has *gloan* and *gloanaj* for "wool", and Cornish has *glu**ân*,
*glawn* etc.

Ok bi uns is dat köller worden. An'n 10. Dag in'n Christmaand ümmer ein
Sneidräwel (Schneetreiben)* nah den'n annern. Ja, un warme Kledaschen halt
man ut dat Schapp, ok de wat warmer sünd so as Flanell.

Perfesser Voßlo: *Flanell *m. Flanell, ein wäwte Stoff mit tämlig smietig
Wull.
Hei hett dat up Hochdüütsch vermellt. Also ein selbstgefertigter, ziemlich
geschmeidiger Webstoff, dessen Einschlag stets von Wolle ist, vorherrscht
und die rechte Seite bildet, während der einfadige Aufzug bei *flässen
Flanell *von Flachsgarn, bei *heiden Flanell *von Hedegarn ist; das meist
buntgestreifte Zeug wurde zu Frauenröcken verwendet.

DUDEN 7: *Flanell *(Gewebe): Das Wort wurde Anfang des 18. Jh.s entlehnt
aus gleichbed. *frz. *flanelle <*engl. *flannel, das selbst *kelt. *Ursprungs
ist. *Kymr. *gwlān "Wolle" **, das zugrunde liegt, ist urverwandt mit *Wolle.
*- Dazu das Adjektiv *flanellen *"aus Flanell".

** Wolle, Nd. Wull.  Dat egenlich' Bedüden von Wull is noch nich klor.
Womoeglich künn *Wull* ein 'Subject' för uns' Lowlanners sien...
