Dear Lowlanders,



With respect to euphemisms for “dead”. We use “dood” for humans and usually
“vrek” for other forms of life.



We also have many euphemisms for “dead”. But the following one is probably
unique to Afrikaans:

“Hy/sy het die emmer geskop” (He/she kicked the bucket.) Is it really unique
to Afrikaans?

"Passed away" is common in England too, though I tend only to use it with
reference other peoples' bereavements, just in case they are sensitive about
it; I refer to my own lost friends and relatives as having died.
