Hi,

It is about 'french creeping in'.
In old english the word for 'slave' was 'wale'.
So we must assume that french was creeping in much earlier.
At least in the spoken language of the 'lower -but dignified-' classes.


I don't know who those slaves were back then, but 'wale' can be used for any
non-germanic foreigner, so they may as well have been referring to Welshmen
(or other Britons).
