Hello Hanne, hello all,
isn't Grün- in Gründonnerstag derived from "greinen" (= weinen, trauern =
to cry, to mourn) because it is the day of Last Supper when Jesus said
farewell to his disciples, groupies, friends & family etc. That's what I
learned. Maybe this is "Volksetymologie"?

*Gründonnerstag* (*mhd. *grüene donerstac; der "Donnerstag der Karwoche"
ist wohl nach dem weitverbreiteten Brauch benannt, an diesem Tag etwas
Grünes, besonders Grünkohl zu essen).
