Subject: "Lowlands" - Vocabulary
I’m attempting to stir up some conversation. Here goes: Another member
mentioned the Hexensabbat (Walpurgisnacht?), which prompted me to check my
handy-dandy Online Etymology Dictionary (*
http://www.etymonline.com/index.php* <http://www.etymonline.com/index.php>)
for anything interesting about the English word ‘hex’, which I knew to be
related to the German. I found that it comes from Pennsylvania German
‘hexe’, meaning to practice witchcraft. What struck me a bit was the verb does
not end in an n, which made me think of when I studied Dutch and how there
are some varieties where the final n, although written, is not
pronounced. Perhaps
a bit of Lowlandic influence on the variety of German that would find its
way to Pennsylvania?

Hi, Steven!
Many, if not most, non-standard German dialects have *-e* where Standard
German and Low Saxon have *-en*.
