It probably helps to have at least a feeling for, or interest in the
culture associated with the language.  I find I can be very irrational in
my affinity to languages; I prefer Nahuatl languages to Mayan ones for
example.  The gods alone know why; I've never been near Mexico and the
Nahua/Mexica words I know wouldn't fill a page in a small notebook.

But then, affinity is the only reason I'm on this list anyway!
