Subject: LL-L History Rape of Gottland
Gottland was a thriving part of Sweden and the town of Visby enjoyed great
prosperity from trade.
Alas Denmark cast greedy eyes their way and in 1361 invaded to loot with
professional Danish soldiers and German mercenaries.
Gottland organised a poorly trained militia which fought bravely but was
finally pushed against the walls of Visby, the citizens refused to give
them entry and they made a gallant last stand during which most were
slaughtered then buried in mass graves.
The History Channel produced an excellent documentary on this incident in
its "Mediaeval Dead" series.
I have two queries….
(a) Was Visby's prosperity due to the Hanseatic League as I suspect ?
(b) What was Visby's fate after the militia was destroyed ?
Best Regards
