I put my money on the snute/schnauze-connection.
And this is  based on the Icelandic word for it: neftobak = nose-tobacco.

Joachim, I know your problem from the perspective of a snus deliverer to
German relatives. So far, sending snus (and receiving it) as a gift in
limited quantities has not been persecuted. And my relatives are happy for
that ...
My Swedish etymology refers to an origin of the word snus (-tobak) from the
same word in (middle?) LS. An origin it shares with many Swedish words.
I agree with your notion that "snute/snus/Schnüss/snout/snut" denote both
mouth and nose. Consequently Swedish "snus" could originally be consumed
via nose or mouth (actually the nasal pathway was first) according to the
Swedish tobacco museum

Words related to "snuff/schnupf" to me mean nose only - hence the division
into "Schnupftabak" vs "Kautabak".
