Dans le cadre de la Chaire d'Excellence 'Semantic Structure and
Ontological Structure':
Seminar
Ora Matushansky / Friederike Moltmann:
REFERENCE: SYNTACTIC, SEMANTIC, AND PHILOSOPHICAL ISSUES
Syntactic research on noun phrases has often been developed rather
separately from the semantic and the philosophical research on reference.
The aim of this seminar is to bring these three directions of research
together, for a fruitful and challenging interchange.
After four overview sessions on key issues concerning the syntax
and semantics of NPs, we will discuss a range of current syntactic,
semantic, and philosophical topics, such as the distinction between
referential noun phrases and nonreferential ones (predicates, measure
phrases, functional and intensional NPs, and expletives), generic NPs,
the semantic structure of quantificational and numerical NPs, the
notion of reference under a perspective, empty terms, the definition
of a noun and the role of a sortal, and the presence / absence of the
article.
The seminar will include presentations by invited speakers
from France and abroad. Two workshops are envisioned, one on
(detached) selfreference and one on expletives and other quasi- or
non-referential NPs. The full program will be available soon.
The seminar can be validated for the program Cogmaster at the DEC and
possibly other universities by special arrangement. It will almost
entirely be given in English
All welcome!
