 Non-factual clausal /like/. A likely origin

 Abstract
Non-factual clausal like is highly compatible with evidential verbs, superseding as if/as though in this regard. Contrary to the general assumption that non-factual clausal like derives from the preposition like, I propose a hypothesis as to its origin that more eloquently explains why it is so frequently used in connection with evidential verbs.
