We invite applications for the 7th Empirical Methods in Cognitive Linguistics workshop to be held in Joao Pessoa, Brazil, August 2-8, 2015. This is the first time EMCL comes to Latin America, and we are very excited for this opportunity.

The goal of EMCL is to facilitate dialogue among language researchers with different methodological backgrounds, i.e. those working on theory, experimentation, corpus linguistics, etc. We do this by hosting a series of minilabs. Each minilab is led by two internationally recognized researchers from different backgrounds, who collaborate in guiding a group of eight students through the steps of developing and carrying out an empirical project during the course of a week.

The minilabs for EMCL 7 are as follows.

Intended audience: Language researchers with an embodiment, situated cognition and/or cognitive linguistics background. No prior experimental or corpus training is required though an understanding of the theoretical issues is necessary. Participants can be at different early stages in their careers, i.e. graduate students/post-grads, post-docs, junior faculty, etc.

Format: Participants will join one of seven hands-on mini-labs for the duration of the week-long workshop. Each mini-lab will be responsible for completing a joint research project. A select group of students (max. eight per group for a total of 56) will be invited to participate. Each group will work with two researchers who will guide them in selecting an idea to investigate. They will then participate in structuring and organizing a research project, and carrying it out. The session will end with a mini-conference where findings will be presented, followed by a general discussion.

Please note that the mini-conference will be open to everyone, including but not limited to participants of the 7th Conference on Linguistics and Cognition

Language of instruction will be English.

Topics to be covered include,
- Deciding on a research topic
- Transforming the research topic into a research question
- Developing experimental hypotheses
- Designing an experiment to test hypotheses
- Making clear predictions based on the design
- Data collection
- Statistical analysis and interpretation
- Presentation of findings to an audience

Participation Fee:

 US$150, or R$360, payable by bank transfer or upon arrival by prior arrangement. (This fee helps cover the costs of organization and faculty travel.)

Application:

To apply, please send the following by February 28, 2015. All materials must be submitted electronically to emcl.admin (at) gmail.com

1. A maximum of two (2) pages, (1000 words, excluding references), describing:
- your academic background,
- your reasons for wanting to participate,
- the research groups you would like to work in and why. Please list 3 in order of preference,
  with number one being your preferred group.
- a brief description of your research interests.

All topics listed above must be addressed. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
2. A copy of your curriculum vitae (C.V.) including a list of (any) publications. For publications, the names of all authors must appear as only initials for first and last names, i.e. Farah, Martha -> F.,M.

3. Formatting of your application must be as follows:

- Please write 'application' in the subject line. 
- All documents must be submitted as a single pdf, labeled with your full name only,
   last name first. Note, though, that all identifying features of applicants will be removed to allow for   
   anonymous review.
- C.V. should appear first.  Your name should only appear at the top of your C.V. and nowhere else.
- Please remove any photographs, as well as references to your age or marital status.  
   Your C.V. should only contain professional information beginning with your
   university training.
- Any deviations will result in the application being returned to you for correction. Samples of
   properly completed applications can be found on the EMCL 7 website.

All identifying features of applicants will be removed to allow for anonymous review.

The application deadline is February 28. Accepted applicants will be notified on or before March 15.

Two (2) tuition scholarships will be awarded by lottery to students experiencing financial hardship. The scholarship will be for the participation fee only, as unfortunately, we do not have funding to cover accommodation or travel.  If you would like to be included in the lottery, please include a brief description of your situation (500 words maximum).

Please note: Attendance is strictly limited to accepted participants. No exceptions will be made so as to preserve pedagogical integrity. That said, everyone is invited to attend the mini-conference where the labs will present their research results.
