Dear Phon,
Yesterday we turned on a new system for user authentication for TalkBank. You will find that, when you log in now, there will be a dialog for you to enter your username and set up a password that you will need to remember. This is the standard procedure followed at most websites nowadays. Once you are logged in, you will be able to access all TalkBank materials for which you have access. We have created a database of over 4000 TalkBank users along with information about which materials they can access. If your email address matches what we have in our database, then you will have automatic access.
Currently, this system is only fully deployed for the Browsable Database. For other actions, such as downloading transcript files, we will be rolling out the new system next week for the 14 databanks by inserting scripts in each of the HTML pages. So, for now, you will see that access to materials in the Browsable database no longer requires you to repeatedly enter username and password, because your browser stores your info as a cookie for the current session.
If you run into any problems with this, please write to me and hopefully we can resolve things during the coming week.
