unicode shortcuts

Thanks Chris and Nick for the suggestions. I will certainly
investigate those options.

In the meantime, I'm really looking for some way to retain the
four-digit unicode system, largely because I still have the codes for
many of the symbols tucked away in my memory.

When I was working in publishing, I came to prefer using the
four-digit codes as opposed to defining my own shortcuts. It really
made things easier when working between different layout platforms, or
when using other people's computers that might be set up differently.

After some investigation I've learned that it is (supposed to be)
possible to do this in OS X simply be selecting 'Input Hex Unicode' in
the system preferences input menu. The 'option' key then functions
more or less like the ALT key does in Windows.

Nonetheless, it doesn't work!
