Hi all,
Thanks for all the responses. Here is a summary.

For those working across multiple platforms and computers, and who
also want to use the four-digit system on a Mac with OS X:

Go to System Preferences -> International -> Input Menu
Select Unicode Hex Input from the list.
If it doesn't allow you to select this option, deselect everything
first and try again.
Important: Now go to the menu bar, click on the flag next to the date
display and select the Unicode Hex Input flag. This should now appear
in the corner instead of the country flag.

Now, to produce the desired symbol just hold down the option key while
typing the four digit code.
Eg option + 0298 will get you the bilabial click ʘ. (On a Pc you would
simply type 0298 directly onto the page then use Alt-x.)

A full list of unicode characters and their associated four-digit
codes is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unicode_characters

For those wishing to set up a personal interface for IPA on a Mac:
•	Use IPAkeys (See chris's email)
•	Use Ukelele(http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=ukelele)
This allows use to define a new keyboard accessible via the Input
Menu. To insert a character that is not on your defined keyboard you
can use the 'character palette' on the same menu.
•	Bill Poser has a cross-platform character entry tool available at:
http://billposer.org/Software/CharEntry.html,one of whose components
lets you enter characters by their Unicode codepoint. The character
will appear in a little buffer region within the tool, from which it
can be exported to the clipboard or saved to a file.

Thanks,
Piers
