maybe more problematic with scripts that are not supported by Microsoft.

you may want to ensure that english text and shan text are using
different input locales, i.e. MS Word believes they are are different
languages, not the same language.

make sure appropriate default fonts for LCG and complex script text is
selected, having the default CS font set to the font you are trying to
change text to may help.
