Indigenous knowledge systems are fundamentally different from that of the
colonial powers. Battiste discusses the distinctions between Eurocentric
and Indigenous knowledge structures and how this should be managed in
Canada. This chapter explores the ethical protocols which academics and
institutions should consider when utilising Indigenous knowledges, and the
responsibilities which Indigenous people and communities have as holders of
cultural knowledge. This chapter discusses who has the right to own
knowledge and how can these rights be managed for Indigenous knowledge
systems. With Indigenous knowledges becoming increasingly popular in
Eurocentric capitalist societies, Battiste prompts the reader to consider
what knowledge is considered privileged and is more powerful, which kinds
of knowledge are rewarded, and who benefits. We will be discussing where
and to what extent the themes of this chapter as seen through an Indigenous
Canadian lens are applicable to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
peoples. FInd the reading link here
