Call for papers
NWAV-AP 7
14-16 December 2022
Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok
The 7th meeting of the New Ways of Analyzing Variation – Asia Pacific conference (NWAV-AP 7) invites submissions for individual papers and proposals for special sessions. Hosted by the Department of Linguistics and the Southeast Asian Linguistics Research Unit (ChulaSEAL), Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, the conference will take place at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, from 14-16 December 2022 in a hybrid format.
NWAV-AP offers researchers an opportunity to present and exchange ongoing issues in the scope of language variation and change in the Asia-Pacific region. The theme of this year’s conference is "language variation and shifting values across generations." Many social movements driven by people of younger generations have recently taken place in the Asia-Pacific region, reflecting social dynamics and rapidly shifting values. With population aging underway and the world constantly changing, a clash of opinions and personalities among different generations is inevitable. As linguistic practices are significant for not only forming individual self but also characterizing a generation, the study of language variation and change can shed light on generational differences and transitions in society. We particularly invite papers on language variation and change which speak to this theme including, but not limited to, intergenerational variation, generational variation, age grading, and change across the lifespan. Other papers on language variation and change across the Asia-Pacific region are also welcome.
The plenary speakers for NWAV-AP 7 will be Hideko Abe (Colby College), Shobha Satyanath (University of Delhi), and Rebecca Lurie Starr (National University of Singapore).
Abstracts for both individual papers and special sessions proposals should not exceed 350 words and must be anonymous. Author names should not appear anywhere on abstracts. An author may submit at most one single-authored and one co-authored abstract. Do not include reference lists, tables or figures in abstracts. Each presentation will be 20 minutes long, with a 5-minute Q&A period.
Submissions for special session proposals also include a separate e-mail to the organizing committee providing a session title, names of authors in the proposed session, their abstract titles, and their EasyChair submission IDs. A special session should include 3-4 proposed 20-minute paper presentations.
Please submit your abstract via EasyChair<https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=nwavap7> (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=nwavap7). Abstract submission will open on 15 July 2022. The deadline for both individual papers and special session proposals is 31 August 2022 (11.55 PM, GMT). Authors will be notified of decisions by mid-October 2022.
