Subject: Interpreting positions
U.S. Department of State seeks Indonesian and Thai interpreters
The Office of Language Services is seeking to increase our contract
roster
of interpreters who work in the English/Indonesian or English/Thai
combination.
Interpreters would accompany Indonesian or Thai visitors on
officially-sponsored U.S. study tours, which generally last three weeks
at a
time.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
* Bilingual in English and Indonesian OR Thai at a contemporary,
college-educated level.
* Permanent work authorization (preferably U.S. citizenship or
"green
card").
* At least two years adult residence in the United States.
* At least two years adult residence in Indonesia or Thailand (or
equivalent immersion).
* Knowledge of United States government, politics, culture and
current
events AND the ability to convey these topics at an educated level in
both
English and Indonesian or Thai.
* University degree or equivalent experience.
* Availability and willingness to travel in the continental United
States for at least one assignment per year. These assignments
generally
last three to four weeks at a time. While there is no way to predict
when
assignments take place, in recent years April, May, July, August, and
November have been the busiest months.
Formal interpreting experience is preferred, but not required.
Qualified
applicants would be tested.
The starting pay for this type of work is $189/day (plus travel and
expenses). This is freelance, contractual work and, as such, does not
include insurance or retirement benefits or any guarantees of work.
Those interested may request an application by mail or fax by calling
our
main office at (202) 261-8800. If you prefer, you may send an e-mail to
ginsbergem at state.gov but we can only send the applications by fax or
snail mail.
