This post provides an opportunity to work for an ambitious
project producing a high quality dictionary based on the northern
Mon-Khmer language Wa, with translation into Chinese, Burmese /
Myanmar and English, and built using advanced techniques in
corpus-based lexicography. The successful candidate will also
will also lead the design and implementation of an Internet resource
suitable for other languages spoken in Burma/Myanmar (besides
Wa) after the project's conclusion.
The job is based in London but will require yearly travel to Yunnan and
perhaps also Thailand and Burma/Myanmar, to collaborate with overseas
contributors to the project.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant
field and have a strong command of written Chinese (putonghuà or Yunnanese).
The ability to work independently and prioritise workload, think logically
and explain technical issues to non-technical contributors is essential.
In addition, applicants must have excellent computer database design and
development skills as well as a strong background in linguistics and/or
lexicography. Knowledge of Burmese and/or Thai will be an advantage
