Yes, Wojtyszko, not Wajda. The film is LONG.... (cf. Bondarchuk to the
nth power) and literalist. It has untold (and best left that way?)
charms for those of us intrigued by Russ./Polish and Polish/Russ.
transfers, also good acting, and a fine (though more Polish than Russian)
sense of irony. But the actors are all too old for their roles (indeed,
Bondarchukianly so) and the film needs more madness and tighter editing.
I ascribe my thorough enjoyment of it to my mongrel roots and to one
aspect of my various perversities. If both mongrel and perverse, you may
also derive pleasure from the (I believe) four hours, if not more, of the
film.
