Bulgarian "deeprichastie"

Sorry, Wayles and David, but in my opinion 'verbal adverb' sounds
much less felicitous than adverbial, or non-declining participle.
'Verbal adverb' gives prominence to the idea of 'adverb', and it is not
really an ad-verbal item, but an ad-clausal one. Besides, if you use
'verbal adverb', then this more less commits you to using 'verbal
adjective' for 'participle', which is really clumsy.
Best of all is
'gerund', which makes a reasonable pair with 'participle'. Because of
its opacity, this term can meaning whatever you want
it to. Also, it's short and, in the context of Slavic, unambiguous. I recall
that Yokoyama
uses the term 'gerund' quite unabashedly to refer to deeprichastie in an
article on historical Russian syntax, after which I decided
never again to be afraid of the word.
