 I said it was _never_ an insult. It was the name for the place, and
allegiance or possession had nothing to with it. What you are listening to
is a descriptive grammarian who tried to make rules so non-native speakers
could more quickly use, or not use, "the" in most cases.

"The Ukraine" was appropriate when it was a territory of the Russian Empire.
