Linguistic profiling

Dear SEELangers,

Last night ABC World News aired a piece on linguistic racial
profiling (virtually the same piece was aired on NPR back in early
Sept.), " Voice Recognition: Can 'Hello' Cost You a Home If You're
Black?". Though the article does not specifically relate to any
Slavic languages, it does concern a topic important to Slavic
linguistics, namely language and politics. I thought it might be of
interest to those of us who teach language and politics/prejudice
courses.

For those who are interested, the article is on the ABC website,
plus a test that anyone can do in which you hear 10 voices and you
have to guess the race of the person speaking. Here's the URL:

Click on "Linguistic Profiling Test" to do the test.

Sincerely,
Elisabeth Elliott
