   Russian Writers Abroad, Past and Present

 We are pleased to announce the publication of the
first volume of the annual review From the Other Shore,
devoted to the study of Russian literary and cultural life
in exile. The review aims to posit Russian culture in
exile as a field worthy of systematic and coherent
scholarly inquiry that surpasses geographic and linguistic
boundaries, necessitates comparative approaches to
literary and cultural studies, and draws on the general
European typology of exile. From the Other Shore is an
international and multilingual venture that brings
together researchers from around the world in one forum
for the discussion, systematization, and dissemination of
knowledge stemming from the study of the cultural activity
of Russian expatriates in any century and under all
historical circumstances.
 The review will publish scholarly articles,
theoretical essays, archival materials, memoirs,
bibliographies, interviews, and book reviews in English,
French, and Russian. Although literature has been the
dominant manifestation of Russian cultural life in exile Ñ
hence the subtitle of the review Ñ From the Other Shore
welcomes contributions dealing with the activity of
Russian expatriates in visual and plastic arts, film,
theater, music, criticism, philosophy, journalism, and
publishing. The review is open to all theoretical and
critical approaches and is particularly interested in
developing methodologies for the study of Russian exilic
experience.
 From the Other Shore uses the signifier ÒRussianÓ in
reference to linguistic and cultural identity rather than
any combination of ethnic, religious or national
appurtenances. The reviewÕs thematic scope includes the
experience of Armenian, Jewish, Ukrainian and any other
arrivals from the Russian empire and the USSR, who were
(willing or reluctant) carriers of Russian language and
culture as testified by their activity in emigration.
 The first volume of From the Other Shore features
articles on Boris PoplavskyÕs and Vladimir NabokovÕs
writings; archival materials related to the artistic and
intellectual activity of Iurii Felzen, V. F. Bulgakov, Vl.
Nabokov, and Nina Berberova; a bibliography of emigre
cultural life in Italy; an interview with Boris Khazanov;
and book reviews
 In December 2001, the range of problems and the format
of From the Other Shore will find logical continuation in
a companion volume Ñ the special issue of Canadian-
American Slavic Studies devoted to Russian exilic
experience.
