Panel Proposal
AAASS 34th National Convention
Pittsburgh, 21-24 November 2002
Multiplicity. Indeterminacy. Nadezhda Durova (Aleksandrov).
We are seeking a presenter, chair, and discussant.
Cavalry maiden, androgyne, eccentric, litterateur, mother, daughter,
son...the approaches to Durova as a historical, cultural, or literary
figure are as various as the roles she alternately took on or rejected. The
complexities of the region(s) in which she lived, was quartered, and
depicted others (both real and fictive) are refracted in the persona of
Durova herself, and the theme of the annual meeting, "Complex Approaches to
a Complex Region," invites the panel's interdisciplinary examination of
this complex figure.
Interested colleagues, please contact off-list

No Man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent,
a part of the main; if a Clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less,
as well as if a Promontory were, as well as if a Manor of thy friends or of
thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved
in Mankind.
-John Donne, Meditation 17
