Although this is not a read, I would recommend the following movies:
Ballad of a Soldier
I Was 19

Yeah, I was 19 was East German, but it features a transplanted German boy
who grew up in Russia and goes back at the end of World War II with the
Russian army. The scene where the men celebrate finishing making their
1000th pelmen is worth it.
