Starost' ne radost'

In old age Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy used to say to Dushan Petrovich 
Makovitskii: "Starost' - radost'" (thus contradicting the Russian 
proverb).  Lev Nikolaevich looked forward to death with joyful 
anticipation, or so he claimed when he was not depressed.
