memorization techniques for student--suggestions?

Dear colleagues,
I have a student who is a highly functioning autistic learner-he can memorize strings of numbers with no problem, but cannot keep vocabulary words in his mind. Has anyone encountered this before, and if so, do you have useful suggestions? Thanks so much in advance.
