translations of Нос & Мертвые души

I like the Pevear and Volokhonsky Gogol, and teach out of it. Also useful
is Bob Maguire's translation of DS, although a little too obviously
scholarly: he tries to render the untranslatable through paraphrase
sometimes, conveying meanings the way a commentary would, without hitting
the same stylistic register -- a problem somewhat similar to Nabokov's
Onegin.
 But Maguire was the best specialist on Gogol I have ever met, or taken
classes with.
