I recall looking at a biography of CC in about 1999, seeing the extent to which his Indian connections had affected his life, and with especial interest in the way he reacted to having Kaw heritage.  I forget the author of the book I read, but said author stated (on what evidence I have no idea) that CC had learned at least the rudiments of  French and Kaw as a child.  I wonder if he recalled any as an adult.  He seems to have erased the Catholic part of his Indian past, as in later life we has (I think) a Methodist.
