Interpreter Preparation Program at Ohlone College
The IPP at Ohlone College has openings for Fall 1998.
Classes begin August 19th.
The Ohlone IPP is a two-year, full-time program with class size limited
to 10 students. Included in the curriculum is a Deaf-mentorship where
students rotate in three six week modules to shadow members of the local
Deaf community and two eight-week modules of mentored internships with
certified interpreters; each course is companioned with a weekly
seminar.
Other course offerings include ASL Discourse, Comparative Linguistics,
Interpreting Preparation Skills, ASL-English/English-ASL Translation,
Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpreting, Interpreting for Specialized
Populations, and Ethics, Role and Responsibilities--a total of 46
units.
Students must be fluent in Sign Language and English. A video-tape and
three letters of reference (at least two from members of the Deaf
community) must accompany application.
The Ohlone College IPP is a unique setting because of the large deaf
student population on campus (~250) as well as the Ohlone College Deaf
Center's faculty and staff. Students have the opportunity to interact
with the deaf students at the college and become involved in the social
and cultural activities of the deaf community both on campus and in the
Fremont area.
Due to the close proximity of the California School for the Deaf, there
are many opportunities to enrich students' education.
Those interested in finding out more about the program, application
procedure and requirements, please contact Sue Owen at the Ohlone
College Deaf Center. SOwen at ohlone.cc.ca.us or call 510-659-6269 Monday
through Thursday 6:30-5:30 until August 3rd, then Monday through Friday
8 - 5.
