Deaf culture

Hello,

This doesn't concern sign language specifically, but I thought someone
might be able to help. I'm an Anthropology student working on an
ethnography of Deaf Culture. My first step is to find demographics on
the Deaf population--number identifying themselves as Deaf vs. number
considered medically deaf, age and sex distribution, etc. I'm having a
great deal of trouble doing this though, and Deaf Services and
government agencies I've contacted have all told me that little information
exists. The most recent data I've been able to get hold of is from
1988.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any work that's been done on this
subject recently or knows of any specific groups I might contact. I'm
particularly looking for info on the Deaf population of the Philadelphia
area, but any sort of stats would be helpful. My e-mail is
jenksac at sas.upenn.edu

Thank you!

Go to the People. Live among them. Learn from them. Serve them. Plan with
them. Start with what they know. Build on what they have. And when the
best leaders leave the people will say, "We have done it ourselves."
