Hello James and everyone -
Thanks for your input on signs that use diagonal movement. I am writing to
give you the summary, which you requested above.
The whole topic started because I posted a new lesson online, that teaches
writing movement on the "Forward-Back Diagonal Planes". This includes
movement that is "up and forward", "down and forward", "up and back" and
"down and back". The lesson online is posted on this page:
Writing Movement on the
Forward-Back Diagonal Planes
http://www.SignWriting.org/arrow011.html
At the end of the lesson, I asked if people could send me suggestions for
signs that use these "diagonal plane movement arrows". So that is how this
whole thing started!!
People then suggested signs using diagonal movement. Some of the
suggestions are signs that use "side to side" diagonal movement, which is
movement "parallel" to your chest, or the front wall.
Other suggestions are signs that are like an airplane taking off, namely
forward and up at the same time. These are the movements that I have had
problems finding examples for....they are more rare.
Here are the suggestions I have received so far:
1. ahead (up-forward)
2. shovel (over the shoulder)
3. hell
4. damn
5. God
6. mountain
7. not (not the standard version, but with crossed flat hands palm down and
moving away in opposite directions, down, forward, and out.)
8. king
9. sash
10. house
11. King/Queen/Prince
12. Princeton, Yale, Stanford
13. PRINCESS, LORD
14. never
15. z
16. pizza
17. lightning
18. order
19. angle
20. STRONG as in DRINK-STRONG
21. IGNORE
22. TAKE-OFF or SPLIT
It has been great to see how many people contributed suggestions, and I do
appreciate it!
Many thanks!
Valerie :-)
