TRAVEL FELLOWSHIPS FOR TISLR 8 IN BARCELONA
Purpose:
We are pleased to announce that the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has
recently indicated that it will fund five fellowships for travel to the
upcoming eighth conference on ¥ heoretical Issues in Sign Language Research
m TISLR) in Barcelona, Spain (http://www.ub.es/ling/tislr8/). TISLR is the major
international conference on the linguistics of signed languages. The purpose of
these fellowships is to promote greater participation of deaf researchers in
sign linguistics by enabling deaf students to attend this conference and to
learn about the latest advances in the field. The fellowships will be
administered by Professor Richard P. Meier at the University of Texas at
Austin.
The fellowships ($1,500 each) are to be used for travel expenses such as
airfare, hotel accomodations, and conference registration fees. As part of the
fellowship, awardees will participate in three lunch meetings at the conference
with leading scholars in the field.
Eligibility:
To be eligible, the applicant must be: i) a US citizen or permanent resident;
ii) deaf; and iii) an undergraduate or graduate student in linguistics or a
related field (e.g., psychology, deaf education, deaf studies, communication
sciences & disorders, anthropology). For graduate student applicants, note
that we will give preference to applicants in their first or second year of
graduate school.
Deadline:
The deadline to apply is June 11, 2004. A committee will review all
applications. Applicants will be notified by email no later than July 16,
2004.
Application:
To apply, please submit the following:
a) a CV, including name; date and place of birth; citizenship status; mailing
address; email address; current university; and degree program.
b) a letter or statement summarizing your research interests and current
activities, and explaining why you are interested in attending the TISLR
conference in Barcelona. Please discuss whatever plans you have for further
education or training in linguistics or related fields.
c) a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who knows you well. This
letter should address what educational benefit you will gain by attending
TISLR. Recommenders should email their letters directly to
rmeier at mail.utexas.edu.
d) a copy of undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate transcripts.
e) We encourage applicants to seek supplemental financial support from their
college or university. If any matching financial funds are available, please
include a letter of support from your department chair (or other appropriate
official) indicating the availability of such funds. Please note that
applications will be considered with or without matching support.
