stuttering in signed languages?

I once saw a native deaf woman stutter in ASL as she was talking to people in front of the group. She was, however, a regular member of the community, married etc. -- her stuttering was not severe enough to interfere with general acceptance. She did not appear to have CP or other physiological - movement stutters, only when she signed.
I also heard tell of a hearing many in California who stuttered severely in spoken English but signed without problems and so, hung out with the Deaf students at CSUN.

Subject: Re: [SLLING-L] stuttering in signed languages?
My contribution to this is only an observation. I once had a student, about 15-18 years old (he was my student for two or three years) who definitely stuttered in his signing. He did have a CP problem on top of his deafness, but to me it seemed as if the stuttering was not due to the CP. He even stuttered while writing on his computer - first syllable twice, or the whole word repeated. In signing, he started, and then started over, before the sign or the utterance was completed. - This seemed to cause him some trouble in communication with other deaf students. I have mentioned this observation to colleagues who are working with stuttering and speech impediment, and they have a hard time believing that my observation could be correct. But as I said, he was my student for at least two years, and this was a persistent problem.
Kind regards,
