Dear SW List, Stefan, Ron, Karl -
DOSBox is useful for "occasional" use on Windows XP..it is "emulating"
or pretending to be DOS...which means the program has to run one
operating system (DOS) "inside" another operating system (XP)...that is
complicated and hard to program...so usually emulation software is
slower than running directly on a machine that is made for the
operating system you are using. So I assumed that DOSBox would be
slower than on a Windows 98 machine...you are right about that,
Stefan...But that does not mean it is not useful to occasionally use
SignWriter DOS on Windows XP in DOSBox...

The only DOS emulator that works as well as a DOS machine is Virtual PC
on a new Macintosh. And you must be running Virtual PC 6.0 or later on
Mac OS X 10.2 or later, on a Mac made in the past two years...Finally,
after I have used emulation software for decades on Macintoshes...for
the first time, I can honestly say I cannot tell the difference between
running DOS on a Mac, versus running DOS on a Windows 98 machine...but
it has taken a long time for VirtualPC to get that good, and DOSBox is
pretty new...so it may never reach that level of speed...

Oh well! We still have many blessings - Merry Christmas everyone!

Val ;-)
