SignWriting List
July 9, 2003

Dear SW List, and programmers -

On July 1st, I wish you all could have been with us...We had a meeting
that I feel was quite important for the future of programming
SignWriting...

There were four of us in the meeting...

Antonio Carlos da Rocha Costa
Developer, SWML
and a new computer program: SW-Edit

Richard Gleaves
Developer, SignWriter DOS
Plus Rich designed the Symbol Editor & Keyboard Editor
used in SignWriter Java...
Plus Rich was the originator of the numbering system we are
using in SymbolBank and SignBank...

Todd Duell
Developer, SignBank and other databases for SignWriting
in FileMaker Pro....Plus Todd is designing a web database for
SymbolBank and SW Documents

Valerie Sutton
(I think you all know me ;-)

It was a dynamic discussion, that first focused on the development of
SignWriter //e for the Apple // computer, back in 1986. We then
discussed the development of SignWriter DOS and some of the problems
Rich Gleaves and I faced during the ten years that Rich worked on the
program. We then discussed some of the symbol issues when categorizing
symbols in SymbolBank and SignBank. Antonio Carlos demonstrated his new
computer program: SW-Edit, which I will describe in the next email
message...Todd and Antonio Carlos discussed the use of SWML with
SignBank entires, hooking into some of the XML features that are
already built into FileMaker ...After the meeting was over, and both
Rich Gleaves and Antonio Carlos had left, Todd and I discussed the
future of SignBank related to XML and SWML...

The end result of the meeting? We now have four computer programs:

SignBank
SW-Edit
SignWriter Java
SignWriter DOS

Two of these will become "SignWriting data entry" programs that will
relate to SignBank, so that we can enter signs directly into SignBank
using these two programs:

SW-Edit
SignWriter Java

So development must continue on both SignWriter Java and SW-Edit to
complete them. I am just guessing...but I bet in the next year this
will happen...

In my next message, I will tell you all about SW-Edit, which is not a
finished program, but holds great promise...

Val ;-)
